David Narins, Monte Taylor (Me), and Sandy Komito at Attu, Alaska in the early
1990's
Sandy Komito still holds the Big Year record of 745 species seen in one calendar
year (1998).
And, Sandy was the main character in the movie "The Big Year" along with
Greg Miller and Al Levantin (photo of them below)
Sandy's record has yet to be broken although many have tried!
Benton Basham - first to break 700 in a Big Year and one of the original
founding members
of the ABA back in 1969

Photo of (less Bill Rydell of Portland, OR - photo below) the 700 Club (Big Years of seeing 700 species
or greater in a calendar year)
Dan Sanders, Greg Miller, Chris Hitt, Benton Basham, Al Levantin, Sandy Komito,
John Vanderpoel, Lynnn Barber, Robert Ake, John Spahr
Dr. William Rydell, Attu Island in 1991 - one of the first birders to do a big
year breaking 700 species
Ebbe Banstorp (my travel buddy for nearly 30 years of chasing) of California and Sandy Komito of New Jersey (now Florida) in 1991
at Attu
Sandy did two Big Years, breaking his own record
back in the day with NO eBird and NO 'network'!
John Vanderpoel (w/brother at left) and Sandy Komito in Anchorage, Alaska 2011
BJ Rose from Sedalia, Missouri at Attu, Alaska circa early 1990's
Was #1 Photographed Bird Species in the ABA for decades
and now retired and enjoying his dog "Patches"
Sadly, BJ passed away June 6th, 2019 and
will be greatly missed by me forever holding
a very special place in my heart!
Monte Taylor #1 Photographed species in the ABA and Xing Hua #1 Photographed

photo taken in Kaeng Krachen National Park in Thailand 2011
Father Tom (who's found more rare birds in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas over
the last 30 years than nearly any other),
Kevin Karlson (one of the best wildlife photographers in North America w/books
to his credit),
and Myself after photographing the Amazon Kingfisher southeast of Harlingen,
Texas
Chris Hitt, John Sterling, and Jim Lomax - trying to deal with the doldrums of
Pelagic birding at times LOL
