An unfortunate event when I hit this American Pipit heading out of Nome Alaska, up the Kougarok Road.
Thought he was dead, but decided maybe not, so spun around and found him (her?)
still alive although
with blood coming out of the mouth.
I held him for awhile to keep him warm (it was pretty chilly that day although
in June), and placed him
in the front seat of my rental truck wrapped in my down vest. At first he just lay there, recuperating, but
after about two hours, still alive, he decided he wanted up and out to look
around. Seven hours later,
up near the Kougarok River crossing, I decided that he apparently was going to survive, so placed him out
on the side of the road in a bush. He sat there for a bit, then flew over
to the side of the river, then back
up to a bush next to me, and then, just before leaving him there, he flew back along the side of the river again - so
popped off the photo on the right before saying good-bye! Maybe I'll see him in southern California this fall/winter?
